Kendi King
Biography
Kendi King is a writer/director of both stage and screen. She began her studies at NYU Tisch Film School, and completed a B.A. in Documentary Filmmaking at Spelman College - with advanced technical skills in sound mixing and editing. Her passion lies in uplifting unheard stories from underrepresented communities. Kendi has professional experience in film production & post across all genres, from traditional narrative features and documentary series, to cutting-edge interactive media and video games. Sheâs worked for industry leaders such as Netflix (inaugural post-production intern), HBO (assistant sound editor, âJerrod Carmichael Reality Showâ), and NBCUniversal (Original Voices Fellowship). She is an Emmy-nominated director (Sports Emmys â24), and was most recently named the Mountainfilm Emerging Filmmaker of the Year (2024). She is a graduate of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences âGold Risingâ program. Her most recent projects as writer/director include a 360-degree Virtual Reality short film funded by the Spelman Innovation Lab, and a proof of concept for a narrative TV series that successfully crowdfunded $14,100 on Seed & Spark.

A parody of embittered teachers, ridiculous acting exercises, and exhausting dance tutorials make up the new short comedy Theater Camp, starring Tony winner Ben Platt, Noah Galvin, and more stage alums. Platt plays acting coach Angelo (who got circumcised for a role he didnât get) while Galvin plays dance teacher Bradley âBabyâ Bjorn, whose instructions include the cat-like jump âGrizabella!â and works a side gig as Millie Bobbie Brownâs stand-in for Stranger Things. The short also pokes fun at the lack of funding in the arts, Stomp, and vocal warm-ups.
