On the night of Lucia's kidnapping, the Unnamed revisits his life. Many years earlier a caravan of Andalusian gypsies arrived at the gates of Milan. Among these were Esteban with his mother, his fiancée Maria Dolores, and the latter's sister, Carmencita who, in love with Esteban, resorts to every means to hinder the wedding. In a scuffle she caused, her sister was killed by thugs. The gypsies' wagons are destroyed and the few survivors, including Esteban and his mother, are forced to flee. Esteban continues his life as a bandit and becomes the terrible Unnamed, who will finally reach his conversion thanks to Lucia and Cardinal Federico.
